Besides health concerns, rats can cause structural problems and fires if allowed
to chew through electric cables.
The normal procedure is to bait roof voids, concealed voids and subfloor areas with
multiple dose baits (commonly Brodifacoum, Difethialone, Bromadialone). These baits
are very effective on rodents and have little to no risk of secondary poisoning
in non target animals/pets. Warfarin has a high risk of secondary poisoning
on non target animals. Do not use if can be avoided.
In re-occurring infestations, modification of the external environment and use of
lockable rodent boxes may be necessary (available through Austrapest). Use of
lockable rodent boxes are designed for sensitive areas to protect children and pets.
